The secret to winning mahjong is strategy and patience!

The scoring system for playing Mahjong can vary depending on the rules used in different versions of the game. Below is a basic scoring system that can be used for a classic Mahjong game:

Basic points for combinations:

  • Pong (triplet) - 2 points
  • This is a combination of three identical tiles. For example, three tiles with the bamboo number 5.
  • Chow (sequence) - 1 point. This is a sequence of three tiles of the same suit (for example, 4, 5, 6 circles).
  • Kong (four) - 4 points. This is a combination of four identical tiles. Each four is given an additional number of points, as it has a higher value.
  • Pair - 1 point. A pair consists of two identical tiles. For example, two tiles with the number 8.

Additional bonuses:

  • Mahjong (winning hand) - 20 points. For a win, if the player is the first to make a winning hand, calls “Mahjong” and wins.
  • Tournament bonus (if the game is played in a tournament) - 10 points. Additional points for winning a tournament or special competition.
  • Closed Mahjong - 10 points. If a player has collected a combination on his own (without the help of other players), he receives a bonus of 10 points.
  • A full set (or “Big Mahjong”) - 30 points. If a player has collected a full set of tiles of a certain type, for example, the entire set in one suit (all bamboo tiles or all circle tiles), he receives a bonus.

Penalties:

  • Penalty for an incorrect combination - minus 5 points. If a player mistakenly calls mahjong or an incorrect combination, he is given a penalty.
  • Penalty for missing a turn - 1 point. If a player missed a turn due to their own fault (for example, they did not make a tile choice or did not respond to an offer), they are awarded a penalty.

Additional points:

  • Bonus for a long sequence - 5 points. If a player has collected a sequence consisting of more than 4 tiles (for example, 4, 5, 6, 7 bamboo), they are awarded an additional 5 points.
  • Bonus for using a rare tile - 3 points. For using tiles that are rarer (for example, eastern and western), the player can receive a bonus.
